Explore the Cosmos at the MSUM Planetarium: The FM Area’s Most Out-of-This-World Experience
For more than 50 years, the MSUM Planetarium has been inspiring curiosity, sparking imagination, and bringing the wonders of the universe to life. Known as the most out-of-this-world experience in the FM area, the planetarium prides itself on offering far more than people expect—live shows, laser light performances, private events, and an ever-changing lineup of programs that make every visit unforgettable.
The MSUM Planetarium opened its doors in 1972, a project born from the excitement of the Great Space Race and the nation’s growing passion for STEM and space science. Since then, it has remained a cornerstone of science education and entertainment in the region, welcoming generations of learners and explorers.
Many don’t realize just how much the MSUM Planetarium offers. Along with its year-round public programming, the planetarium hosts birthday parties and private events, tailor-made for anyone looking to add a cosmic twist to their celebration. With no other planetariums like it in the region—the closest comparable one being in St. Cloud—MSUM stands uniquely poised as the area’s immersive gateway to the universe.
What sets it apart further is its commitment to live, interactive programming. Every educational show includes a live component, and many are completely live, delivering an experience that’s fresh, responsive, and designed around the audience. Whether you're a stargazer, a science enthusiast, or just looking for something new and inspiring, the variety ensures there’s always something intriguing happening under the dome.
Over the years, the planetarium has evolved with the needs and interests of its community. While it still offers the classic, awe-filled star shows people love, recent updates have launched the experience to a new level. One of the biggest changes has been the addition of in-house laser light and music shows. Once an annual event relying on rented equipment, these vibrant, dynamic productions can now be offered anytime—including for private parties.
Kids (and adults!) love Laika the space dog—a beloved feature on the wall among the planetarium’s colorful space-themed artwork. Unique merchandise and hands-on creativity make the space inviting, playful, and full of cosmic charm.
Step through the doors of the MSUM Planetarium and the goal is simple: to leave you feeling awe-inspired. Visitors of all ages walk away uplifted, curious, and amazed by what they experienced—whether it’s their first visit or a nostalgic return from their elementary school days. Many call it one of the area’s true hidden gems.
Beyond entertainment, the planetarium plays an important role in the local community. It provides high-quality educational experiences tailored to audiences of all ages and backgrounds and works to spark curiosity in the next generation of scientists, thinkers, dreamers, and explorers. Its programs offer families and schools meaningful opportunities to learn together, while also contributing to the region’s cultural and educational landscape.
