This December, Theatre B invites audiences to journey through a century of birthdays, memories, and quiet transformations in Noah Haidle’s Birthday Candles, directed by Theatre B Company Member Jean Wilhelmi. Poignant, humorous, and deeply human, the play asks a simple and profound question: What does it mean to live a good life?
Birthday Candles follows Ernestine Ashworth from age 17 to 107—all without leaving her Grand Rapids, Michigan kitchen. As the years pass in moments, Ernestine grapples with dreams, heartbreaks, family, love, regret, and the shimmering beauty found in ordinary days. “For my money, Birthday Candles is precisely why people go to the theater,” wrote the Chicago Tribune, praising the play’s emotional resonance.
